Things to consider when buying new Air Conditioning equipment
Regardless of whether you are fitting out a commercial factory or cooling the back room of your house, there are a number of things you should consider when buying new Air Conditioning equipment. So before you commit to any purchase – whether you are installing a new unit or replacing an existing system, stop and consider 5 key questions;
- What is the size, layout and aspect of the area to be controlled? Every unit is rated for a specific capacity, so asking a small unit to control a large area will not work. Walls, corridors and partitions can impact airflow, so the pure size of the room alone is not sufficient.
- What is the construction form – is it insulated, are the floors covered, is it on a slab, how much window glass exposure, what window fixings etc? The thermal properties of the construction material not only impacts how quickly the temperature can be altered, but also impacts how easily a temperature can be maintained.
- What will be the use of the area – office, showroom, retail, gaming, medical, nursing, storage or accommodation – AND, how critical is the temperature control to your operations? The more critical the level of temperature control, the more planning is required to balance the airflows of the room.
- What will be the average use of the space – ie. number of people, number of computers, open or closed doors, pallets, shelves, 8 hours or 24, and how will it be controlled? What is physically located in a space can dramatically impact the unit required, as for instance, computer equipment gives off heat which then needs to be factored into your assessment.
- Budget – covers not only what will be spent on the purchase (inc. installation and any site modifications) but also ongoing running and operational costs. It is a false economy to install a smaller, cheaper unit if it’s always going to be run at peak capacity and result in large running cost.
Armed with these key points of information, we can provide sound guidance on the most appropriate solution for your need. Air-conditioning and refrigeration is a science, and rarely is a simple “out of the box” solution the best alternative for your needs. By fully understanding your requirements – we can provide a customised solution which will not only run more efficiently, but will last longer as well – saving you both time and money.
